WHAT IS IT WE DO?
Toyo Budo offers practical and dynamic Martial Arts training in a relaxed and informal environment.
Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve got previous experience in martial arts, our club is open to anyone aged 14 and over.
We practice Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, with a focus on awareness, timing, distance and movement — helping you build coordination, stay composed under pressure, and respond rather than react.

PRACTICAL
We try to take the teachings of the traditional Japanese martial schools and look at that in realistic situations. So you’re not just studying a historic martial art, but actually learning something that can be practically applied for self-defence.
A lot of this is about developing ‘feel’ because thinking is far too slow to help you in a real fight.
TRADITIONAL WEAPONS
We regularly train using a range of traditional Japanese weapons (safe versions obviously!). It’s a great way of keeping things interesting, and different weapons help you learn new things about timing and distance.
It could be a katana (samurai sword), a rokushakubo (6ft staff), a tanto (knife) or even something modern.
UNARMED COMBAT
We also cover the multitude of unarmed techniques listed for the different martial schools within the Bujinkan including striking, grappling, throws, locks, escapes/counters and weapon defence (when you don’t have one and they do).
At the end of the day, it’s more important to learn the underlying movement and strategy than memorise hundreds of techniques.
About Jason Reeve, your Instructor
I began my martial arts journey with Shotokan Karate whilst at High School, training diligently for a few years, but always feeling that something was missing.
However, a strange quirk of fate led me to attending a weekend Shadow Warrior Ninjutsu seminar in Merseyside with Brin Morgan in 1987. When the weekend was over, I knew I’d found the path I’d been searching for, but didn’t realise that I’d set in motion a series of events that would eventually bring the art of Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu right to my own doorstep 13 years later.
I then spent 24 years training intensively under the guidance of a deeply experienced but low-profile Bujinkan Jūgodan, and since 2025 I’ve continued my training with Dai Shihan Rob Renner (founder of the Bujinkan Zeropoint Dojo).
I’ve previously trained in Japan with Sōke Masaaki Hatsumi and several senior Sensei, and regularly attend seminars in the UK. My teaching style is relaxed, practical, and focused on helping students develop their awareness of what they are doing – building an increased sensitivity, from which they can experience for themselves what’s really happening.
I’m proud to be associated with the BMABA and you can search their website for details here British Martial Arts & Boxing Association
